They give you stickers! Edit:::Thanks to everyone who responded! I am going to run the programs suggested.I ran my Kaspersky software and it came up with 16 errors. When it asked if I wanted to clean it, I typed in my activation code. It would not take it. I phoned their tech support, who took over my computer remotely.

After looking through my computer management and system configuration, they said I had over 7,800 errors, and 889 missing files. They determined I needed to purchase a plan from tech support (utilizing a Microsoft Engineer) who would fix everything for $159. They told me my computer could shut down at any minute.

How shall I proceed? Is there a good way to fix this? I don't see that my computer is having big problems, but Kaspersky is yellow all of the time on my screen.

Thanks in advance for any advice! This sounds extremely odd.

Where did you get your Kaspersky software and why did you just have an activation code laying around that wasn't already attached to the software. Second thing, If you already bought the software they would not ask you for another 159 to fix it. I think you got some bunk software that gives you a phony number for the scam service. There are a few virus and malware tutorials on, I made the one on the sidebar which is a little outdated but can still provide some support. TL:DR, It's a scam, Don't pay shit, The scam people will probably start getting really aggressive and start using scare tactics. Since they already have your phone number expect some calls, They smell bait.

Also can you provide a screenshot of the kaspersky software, I'm interested in how it compares to the real software that I use at home. What version of kaspersky are you running, I haven't seen this type of GUI before but that could just be display preferences. I would recommend uninstalling that version of Kaspersky, Download and running that. Malwarebytes or Microsoft Security Essentials should be downloaded and ran.

Once you have done those scans we can determine the next course of action, Do you recall downloading Kaspersky from the official site? That software does look like Kaspersky software, Perhaps old. The behavior of the Kaspersky tech simply reeked of scam. Typically scams will tell you that there is a virus, Get you to call the 1800 number, Get remote access, OMG YOU HAVE 8 MILLION VIRUSES, Let us fix that with our 'Microsoft Engineer', You computer will blow up if you don't pay us.edit, Re-read the original post, First the activation code you put in should have worked. Since it didn't it means there is already a pretty good chance it's fake.

Second thing, By looking at the computer management and system config he determined you had 7,800 errors, and 889 missing files? This makes zero sense. I would cease all communication with that support number you called. If they call back tell them you've already addressed the problem. If the program was indeed fake and you already have them remote access there is a chance they gained even more access to your computer. If you are unsure how to proceed let us know and we can provide some guides to walk you through cleaning up this. All the recent viruses I've had to deal with in the last year or so are all the same.

They typically come from a web page with an expired domain or a junk ad running on the page. A screen will popup pretending to be whatever antivirus program you are using (it will look identical), and tell you that you need to quickly install something or the world will explode. It also does it's damnest to lock of your browser so it seems like your computer is frozen, which it's not, a ctrl-alt-del will work. No a/v program is going to ask to install critical software right this second or the sky will fall. If you do install this fix-it-all software, that is the point where you now have installed the virus.

Once the virus is installed you can't trust anything on your computer anymore and it'll run a neat trick where it tries to block any other a/v software from running or being installed. This can be bypassed by changing the name or a few other tricks, but anyway, So after it installs the virus, it continues to tell you it can't fix the virus. That should be a pretty big red flag, didn't it just say it would fix the virus if you installed the software? Anyway, next it will ask you to call a number or give up a credit card number in order to 'really' fix the virus. Once you do this, they will temporarily disable some of the annoying popups from the virus but will set a timer that will bring the virus back later so they can charge you again to remove it. If they get your credit card number, btw, you'll need to cancel your credit card and get a new one. Call your credit card company, they'll walk you through what to do.

Anyway, worse for you is you gave them remote access into your machine. This means that most likely they'll continue to have access to your machine and installed a couple back doors as well to make sure if you remove them, they can still get back in. So here's where your at. You can boot into safe mode by holding down F8 while you boot. Once you are in, start transferring your files onto a flash drive, network drive, google drive, or wherever.

This is first and foremost. After getting as much sensitive information off the computer, it's time to reformat. Dig up your discs, install Ubuntu, buy a copy of windows 7 from the store, whatever you have to do to completely wipe everything off your computer and start over. As an alternative, you could buy a new hard drive (SSD's are great) and install an O/S onto a new hard drive and then copy your files from the old hard drive that you want to save to the new hard drive and then reformat the old hard drive. The malware from the old hard drive will have no effect on the new hard drive as long as you don't open it and start clicking on every executable file you can find. In fact, I would suggest not clicking on any file that executes on that old hard drive. For future needs, either start using Ubuntu or Chrome, or setup your Windows install to require a password to modify the computer and make that password 'InstallVirusNow', that way, you will always think twice when a random window pops up asking you to install software.

Written from my chromebox, which doesn't run or require any antivirus software. For future reference, if you call one company and say they are going to get a microsoft engineer on the line to help you, be very very wary.

Quick help from here on out? Google search malwarebytes antimalware (i specifically search for mbam majorgeeks as I have yet to get a bad download from them) download that, update it. Reboot your computer and start in safe mode, run malwarebytes until it comes back clean. You might have to reboot your machine after a malwarebytes scan, if you do, back back into safe mode.
